Who We Are

In 2019 The Windsor Trooper was taken over by Mark Powell (Pictured top left) & John Cusworth (Pictured top centre), landlords of a very successful pub called The Mermaid, St Albans part of The Burlison Inns Group. There Mark & John have won numerous CAMRA Cider Pub of the year awards for Hertfordshire as well as completing ‘The Double’ by also winning CAMRA Pub of the year in 2016.

Buoyed by the success of The Mermaid, Gary Burlison, Director of Burlison Inns, offered Mark & John the opportunity to take on a second tenancy. The offer was accepted and in 2019 the keys were handed over and the first part of the refurbishment took place. The Windsor Trooper had clearly seen better days and was very tired looking, the initial refurbishment focused on the main bar, cellar and toilets. The pub was closed for around 6 weeks ready for a grand reopening at the beginning of September 2019.

Mark & John’s first decision was who to pick someone to manage The Windsor Trooper, They picked their assistant manager from The Mermaid, James Waud (Pictured top right). A year later, Scott Maclean (Pictured middle, centre) joined the team as assistant manager.

In the first year despite negotiating lockdowns and numerous new rules and regulations, The Windsor Trooper came runner up for Slough, Windsor & Maidenhead (SWM) CAMRA Cider Pub of the year, we repeated that achievement in year two. However in year three The Windsor Trooper won SWM CAMRA Cider Pub of the year and also came 3rd for SWM CAMRA Pub of the year. (Picture shows James & Scott receiving the awards) This is an amazing achievement for such a short space of time.

Since 2019, the rest of the pub and hotel rooms have been completely overhauled, The Trooper now boasts a wonderful function room suitable for almost any occasion and hosts live music every Thursday. We have also converted what was a very small and not very useful Car Park into one of Windsor’s most popular pub gardens.

The Windsor Trooper is a real gem set in the heart of the residential section of Windsor, Situated on the affluent St Leonards Road you’d be hard-pressed to find a pub with a better atmosphere seven days a week in Windsor.
